Hi folks,

Pleased I found this interesting forum. Have 2 young boars ready to slaughter this morning. For large pigs have a slaughterman come in as lifting is difficult for a man with a pulley let alone some elderly lady - and her cat!lol

Don't see the problem, except for the police pos - tell you you must not shoot a pig with your .22 rifle. Info. on humane slaughter is available from Humane Slaughter Ass. who can advise on point of entry of bullet, which varies with some breeds.

Main points being you are not able to sell any meat and getting rid of the waste. DEFRA say you must take waste to licensed premises to be dispossed of. I have nothing left except for bones and skin, dogs get the pluck, make brawn and sausages - have to be careful about leaving any waste in bucket overnight as foxes will take it!

Slaughter houses are no place for smallholders animals! Smallholders are not commercial and should not be treated as such. Feeding pigs with scraps has been going on for years - we are still alive and kicking, if it's good enough for us to eat it's good enough for the animals. A good life a quick painless death and a tasty bit of pork. I also, do lambs at home.

We killed and butchered pigs, at home, in the 1940's. Wonder how much influence the big supermarkets try and excert on DEFRA policy today.

Have 3 large cobbs to do as well, may have to shoot them in the head as can't do the broom stick method of slaughter, will be hard to dislocate their necks due to size.

Slaughtering of chicken is another grey area - what is the most humane way? Questions have been raised regarding dislocation of neck! What do you folks think? Women, at home alone, during the war used shot guns - OMG the pellets! ;0)

I am firmly convinced whether it's there in the UK or here in the US that laws are enacted to control our lives and to benefit the few. Who does the law help? The slaughter houses. Heaven forbid if they lose money every time one of us decides to do this ts home rather than taking the animal "to them". HOW GREEDY! to take away someone's rights just for a few extra dollars. Please Human Health concerns my butt. The government doesn't care about our health. If it did, it wouldn't let half the crap found in foods and drinks to be sold to the public. So it is just a matter of the right "public official being bought off and you have another law passed that ties people's hands and flushes another liberty down the toilet. At the rate they have been going I am surprised we have anything left to flush.

well it would appear that i am breaking the law on a fairly regular basis! i have slaughtered and butchered my own pigs with the help of a friend and found it to be a hugely rewarding proses and certainly the least stressful the the pigs. i have also caught hundreds of rabbits with the help of ferrets and gutted and skinned them myself and sold them to restaurants and also to the butcher! all of this has been done with more respect toward the animals in question than any slaughter house could possibly claim. killing any animal should not be done lightly and the night before dispatching the pigs i hardly slept a wink, this is not something that any one working in a abattoir experiences. these age old practises probably supply us with the most environmentally sound meat possible and if government is serious about sustainable food production in the uk they should be supporting us not outlawing us.

I have just contacted Defra, who informed me that you can not slaughter a pig yourself and that they have to be taken to an abatoir or have a licensed slaughterer attend your premises. What was even more interesting is that you are not allowed to cull your own chickens or coquerells for the table in a simillar manner ! Crazy. But, you dont need to be licensed to keep chickens in the first place... The worlds gone mad !

Just a bit of info I picked up From River Cottage(Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall) You can kill your own pigs for YOUR consumption but you cannot sell the meat to the public (you can give to family and friends)so you can kill to eat same for chicken rabbit pigs lamb etc but you cannot slaughter to sell if you intend selling the meat you must take it to an abbatoir hope this helps and hope the information is true as was stated

In Germany it is allowed to slaughter your own pig at home. You just need some kind of meat inspector (whom you have to pay) to come over and examine the pig, when it is healthy, you kill it while he's watching, then he checks the meat, then he gets a schnaps and leaves and you can make wurst and bacon.
My uncle still slaughters one or two pigs a year. Whenn I was a child I watched many pig slaughterings and I must say such a day is one big feast. The whole family comes together, all aunts and uncles and a bunch of children. There is a lot of work to be done, a lot to be eaten and everybody is very, very happy when the work is done. And for months there is the joy of eating your very own bacon and wurst.
Good luck with this pig business!
